a tuned mass damper in the shanghai tower has kept the 632 meters skyscraper stable against typhoon in-fa. the special wind resistance device weighs about 1,000 tonnes and can produce a reacting force against the tower's mass inertia. the vibration of the tower will be offset by the damper's movement, providing more comfort to people on the higher floors. the skyscraper's high-speed elevators will also run more smoothly.

shanghai tower is the world's first high-rise building to adopt eddy-current damping technologies. compared with traditional mechanical dampers, the eddy-current model has better performances with less maintenance cost. the building can maintain stability against frequent winds and only 10% of people in it will feel the vibrations.
